Drop D Tuning Survival Sheet

Drop D Chords

Drop D Guitar Chords

You don’t need to relearn the guitar to play in Drop D.

Quick Start

Tuning: D A D G B E

  • String 6 (Low E): Tune DOWN one whole step to D.
  • Strings 5–1: Stay in Standard.

Quick Check: The 12th fret harmonic of your low string (now D) should match the open 4th string (D).

What Still Works (And What Breaks)

You don’t need to throw away your standard tuning knowledge.

What Still Works (Safe Zone)

  • Strings 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 are exactly the same as Standard tuning.
  • A Major / A Minor: Played exactly the same.
  • C Major / Am7: Played exactly the same.
  • B Minor (Barre): Played exactly the same (just don’t hit the low E).

What Breaks

  • E Major / E Minor: These standard “cowboy chords” sound terrible now because the root note has moved.
  • G Major (Open): You have to mute the low string or reach all the way to the 5th fret.
  • Full Barre Chords (Root 6): Any barre chord rooted on the E string is now broken.

Drop D is just the gateway. If you like the heavy drone but want more melody, try Double Drop D next.
